Solving Long Stable AES50 Runs
The video discusses the challenges and limitations of using long stable AES50 cables. The speaker highlights issues such as pops and drops that can occur with AES50 and the vulnerability of the protocol to electrostatic discharge. Shielded cables are recommended to minimize these issues, but stability is not guaranteed. The video explores alternative solutions like the Klark Teknik DN 9620 for conversion to fiber and longer cable lengths. The speaker expresses frustration with the limitations and proposes testing AES50 cables beyond their maximum capacity to gain confidence in their reliability. They demonstrate successful audio transmission using a shielded Cat5e cable, indicating the possibility of extending the connection beyond the recommended distance. The importance of understanding cable limits and finding a buffer zone for reliable performance is emphasized. The video also mentions a stable 100-meter cable developed and seeks feedback on releasing it as a product.

    pardon my ignorance, ethernet/network switches are incompatible w/ the data transmission protocols in pro-audio? (these days switches introduce latency under 0.1ms)

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat 21 годину тому

      There are many audio over network formats used for pro audio. Some are Ethernet compatible, some are not. AES50 is a layer 1 and does not use the Ethernet frame structure. Latency added by switches and such once a signal is digital tends to be very low The issue is in the conversion from analog to digital and back to analog where conversions to and from more complex layer 2 and 3 Ethernet adds more latency than converting to and from layer 1. The issue is that later 1, while having very low latency conversions, also does not have all the the features and compatibilities and protections of the higher levels en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_audio_network_protocols

    DAVE !!!! Why are you not measuring Total Harmonic Distortion ... Freq response is 1 thing.. THD is another ... I'm disappointed that your experiments did NOT take distortion into account, other than clipping, Which is audible. ... THD will impact the 'listenability" and ear fatigue over time.

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat 2 дні тому

      Total harmonic distortion is useful and important for low volume and mid volume and anything that isn't driving an amp really hard. Once you get into clipping your total harmonic distortion goes through the roof. This test is all about seeing which amp can deliver more power before it goes into massive distortion IE clipping. As far as Fidelity and listenability and other aspects those will vary greatly for manufacture to manufacture as well. This test was more answering the question " doesn't app need to be big or heavy in order to be loud and deliver more power?" Kind of like taking two different cars to the drag strip to see which one has better acceleration and top speed is what this test is about. A total harmonic distortion test is more like a test of which amp has a smoother ride.

    • @sambaker7255
      @sambaker7255 2 дні тому

      @@DaveRat Hi Dave.. I would suggest that THD is very important especially at high volumes. Yes clipping is overdriving the amp (well the power supply) but If THD is high then all you are doing is amplifying the distortion along with the signal. BUT..... of course speaker distortion will eclipse THD from any amp so perhaps it's an academic discussion at best. As you know I am old school... for me an amplifier should be rated at rated RMS, 8 ohms 20-20K and as low THD as possible. Now i know current music as a much higher sub 20cps component which is the domain of Subs. The issue of "head room" or peak output is really a function of Power supply to the output chip set. Not enough power and the system will clip and loose frequency response. Your demonstrations and testing are always right on, so don't take my comments as discounting your methods...Just looking to have the conversation.. Thanks

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat 2 дні тому

      I try and test the things that are not readily available in the spec sheets. I believe the THD of the amps I tested is spec'ed either the same or nearly the same. And since they are trusted manufacturers we don't have any reason to believe their specs are not accurate or close to accurate. THD is a widely used and pretty universally standardized spec. For those kinds of tests there are other people out there, My adventures are about finding the hidden things and misunderstood aspects and audio Gremlins that people tend to overlook

    I hope you are very proud of yourself. This is an excellent video, but you already know that from all of the positive comments. So instead, I thought it'd be cool to paint you a picture of how awesome you are. Let's assume every person that left a comment fixed their toothbrush after watching. There's 500 comments, but you replied to most, so let's say 250 people. The price for a Sonicare ranges from $30-$90+. So lets just use $50 as a rough guess for an average. That's $12,500 that you collectively saved people. But wait. How many views do you have? 117k. I can't imagine that people are coming here if they don't have one or aren't intending to fix it. So let's grab a safe number, a bit less than half the people that watched the video attempted to fix and were able to fix. 50,000 people. Dude. That's freakin' $2,500,000! Two point five million dollars that you likely saved people!!! Could be more! Who knows! Regardless, whatever the true amount is, you have clearly made a huge impact on people's collective finances. Super cool!

    Hi Dave, I love your analogies for conveying engineering concepts with intuition. I was hoping you could apply your science communication skills to a simple question that has been bothering me for ages: In power engineering, we use a transformer at the source and to step up voltage (and step down current) to maximize the efficiency of long distance power transmission. In audio engineering, we do the opposite; step down the source’s voltage and step up the current to maximize the efficiency of long distance signal transmission. How would you explain in an intuitive way to, say, a high school physics student, why power vs audio engineers do the opposite? Thanks, Brian

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat 6 днів тому

      Interesting! Maybe a bit of clarification in that audio does not step down voltage and up current per se, but rather things like mics are typically already low voltage higher current right off the voice coil. I will think on this further but off the top of my head I would say the power transmission is driven by minimizing loss and the goal is to transmit max watts. For audio the driving factor is optimizing frequency response, minimizing HF loss and with the exception of post power ams, loss of voltage or watts is not a significant concern. Losing 1/2 the power of an audio signal is no big deal as long as we stay above the noise floor. So... For audio signals, low impedance is critical. Our enemy is capacitance. For power generation higher impedances rolling off high frequencies I advantageous as it helps filter noise. So narrowing it down, audio wants low impedance which is a high current low voltage scenario compared tolong distance power generation, high impedance low current is optimal. But,,, audio does use the power generation concept for 70 volt lines, where we do exactly the same thing as power, transform up to high voltage and transform back down at the speaker. But it does not sound great So from that perspective, if transmission of power is the goal, high voltage low current If transmission of accurate wide bandwidth signal is the primary goal, then lower impedances are preferred, which ruslts in higher currents and lower voltage, Great question and will ponder and simplify

    Dave, Thanks so much for all your very informative videos! Always amazing work! It's so interesting that my team and I never experience this problem with our Pro2 and the 100m unshielded cat5's that it came with. But when we use even 75 meter Elite Core STP cat5e with our M/X32's we get the ESD explosion from hell every other hour or so. We never get intermittent drop outs though (except when the discharge happens). I'm wondering if there are two issues at play that are somewhat unrelated: 1. intermittent connection due to user's cable not being to the spec you speak of in this video, for the length people are running and 2. the ESD that seems to freak out the word clock generator in the mixer when the discharge grounds to the circuit board. What do you think about installing an RJ45 grounding block at least at one end of the cable to redirect the ESD to the ground plug of an outlet? Just to solve the ESD and not the intermittent connection issue, of course. Thoughts?

      It seems to be several things going on. Maybe take a look at this other video I did and let me know what you think. I go into much more depth and testing. ua-cam.com/video/bQXOXWuxCGA/v-deo.htmlsi=46Ma4RwH4BCSfF0e

    I had some serious issues with this a few years back. I since changed the cable and that helps a lot, haven't had any issues except the odd one, very occasionally. But anyway, this video is a problem that I've found myself chasing my tail before, thank you so much !

    Most every time Neutrik "improves" something, I prefer the old one. Why not make your tool from ABS instead of wood? Maybe lock the slip ring in place with thin CA glue? Just be careful, as it likes to run all over.

      @DaveRat 8 днів тому

      Hmmm, ABS smells kind of bad and makes a bunch of non recyclable plastic mess when I cut it up on the CNC machine. Also the laser etch gets all mucky and melty and is hard to read unless if I buy layered ABS. Baltic Birch wood cuts well and with a light coat of paint, the laser etch is clear and clean. I prefer to work with wood over plastic whenever possible. Could 3D print it as well but that is slow and and super time consuming. I can cut like 20 or more of these all at once on the CNC

    Great video! Would it be possible to test CAT cables on Ultralink and see what the maximum length would be? Since it also carries audio over TP cable, but it's different than AES50. I was also wondering about the new StageCONNECT on Wing console as well as Midas ultralink and stageconnect bus interfaces. It uses XLR/DMX 3 pin cable to carry 16 digital audio channels, which seems like an interesting technology to experiment with (what cables would work, what is the maximum length of cable, number of interconnects etc.). Thanks!

    One other factor that you might want to measure is Change in Insertion Loss due to Cable Temperature. Some manufactures derate max distance as much as 5% for 120F vs 68F

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat 8 днів тому

      Yes, DC resistance will rise with temperature. Maybe check out this vid for a more in depth test adventure. Temp differentials and degradation over time are a few reasons you want a cable to be stable well beyond the lengths used. ua-cam.com/video/bQXOXWuxCGA/v-deo.htmlsi=jZUCL5w71w4gkOAo

    For a very long time, I avoided the ‘sub on aux’ method. My main motive probably arose from the fact I am always multitracking every single show I mix and make the effort to filter all my stems accordingly. It’s only recently I see the flaw in my reasoning and Dave helped a lot with it. When simultaneously mixing and tracking, the responsibilities add up to a level that can be a risky undertaking if setup time is short. A ‘sub on aux’ directly addresses both issues in an efficiency and most important, sonic improvement. In a console with 70-80 mix channels, barely a handful need to contribute to the subwoofer. Post-aux feed the few and mute-aux the remainder and you have beaten several major issues in one smooth move. If the console allows, flip that aux’s master to a fader for inventive FX.

    Dave your Cable is definitely a MUST AND a WINNER. I'm definitely indefesting in that. It's worth for the Business we Inn. Question is that only in red or also in black

      Yes it's a Cat6a cable and we only make it in red currently.
